Avalanche Transceiver

Personal Avalanche Rescue Transceiver
ICAR is recommending that each member of a team exposed to or working in avalanche terrain be equipped with an avalanche transceiver that meets the requirements of the standard ETSI EN 300 718 (1 and 2).
While one specific manufacturer is not recommended, an avalanche transceiver should have a few basic functions available to be considered for use in a professional setting.

 

Transceiver Specifications:

1. 3 antenna unit
2. Marking Function
3. Battery Display
4. “Realistic Maximum Range”* of at least 30 meters
5. Revert to Send functionality

For teams to consider based on needs/training availability

1. Analog tones available
2. Interference indication in search mode

 

Transceiver use:

Teams and individuals should only be deemed competent in their use with constant practice while also demonstrating an established standard determined by the individual teams/users.

 

Retirement/Replacement/Testing:

Transceivers should be assessed for proper function before use. They should also be re-assessed following an event wherein the transceiver was subject to harm. Any transceiver that shows signs of damage or lack of proper function should be taken out of service and replaced.
Transceivers should be updated with the latest firmware regularly via manufactures app or specialized retail.

Always follow manufacturer recommendations for care, storage, maintenance and replacement to ensure proper function.
